Become a "U Turn" Leader

Sometimes leadership isn’t about stepping in when everything is smooth sailing. It’s about showing up when the team feels like they’re spinning their wheels, burning energy, and going nowhere. This is being a U-Turn Leader—the one who helps the team turn around when they can’t see a way forward.

I’ve seen this play out in my own work. I’ve walked alongside people who were exhausted from trying so hard but weren’t seeing results. Their motivation was slipping, and the atmosphere was heavy. That’s when a leader has to step in—not with cosmetic changes that just make things look better on the surface, but with critical changes that actually stop the downward spiral.

Flattening the Curve

A U-Turn Leader comes in with a servant’s heart. You listen first, you understand the situation, and then you make the hard calls that flatten out the chaos. Cosmetic changes are like painting over cracks in the wall. Critical changes are fixing the foundation so the wall doesn’t collapse.

Once the curve is flattened, the real work begins—creating positive momentum.

The Leadership Dance

John Maxwell calls this the Leadership Dance, and it’s exactly what a U-Turn Leader does:

  • Walk Ahead → Show the way. Be the example. Let people see what’s possible.

  • Walk Beside → Be a friend. Invite them into the process so they feel ownership of the change.

  • Walk Behind → Empower. Watch carefully, support intentionally, and make sure those you’ve empowered have what they need to succeed.

I’ve lived this dance and love the leadership challenge. Sometimes I’m out front, modeling clarity and structure. Other times I’m shoulder-to-shoulder with someone, helping them wrestle through a tough decision. And often, I’m behind them—cheering, praying, and making sure they have the tools to thrive.

The Test of Leadership

The test of leadership isn’t how shiny your own success looks. It’s how much positive change you can spark in others. And yes, people will resist change—because change is hard. But here’s the truth:

  • People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision.

  • Value matters more than appearances. Bring what your team actually needs.

  • Leadership is never about you. It’s about the team succeeding together.

Being a U-Turn Leader means stepping in at the breaking point, stopping the negative momentum, and helping the team find a new direction. It’s not about quick fixes—it’s about transformation.

When you lead with humility, clarity, and a servant’s heart, you don’t just turn the team around. You help them bloom into who they were meant to be.
